SpamHillator as an antispam tool

Hi
Everyone,

We’ve found
a tool to double the effectiveness of spamihilator for outlook express
filtering called blacklist filter.

This will
better identify spam mails without the need to learn a lot of the spam mails.

Eg. after
you’ve installed spamihilator for the first time, you start off with a
‘not-so-smart’ spam filter. Therefore, lots of training is required for the
spamihilator. But with the blacklist filter, it gets 70% smarter than without
the filter!

The tool
will be available in the server under SOP with spamihilator once the server is
up and running.

Techies,
please make sure that the tool is installed in YWCA CDCs and NOF implementation
where the users in those premises uses Outlook Express.

Thanks!

AirSnort - WEP Cracker

Have you ever wondered how we can try to extract WEP keys from the wireless signals?

I have found this link, but never really tried, maybe we can try on our own network to see if things works!

You will need Air-Snort for XP.
This is the guide:

Mike's Guide to Airsnort on Windows XP

  1. Airopeek Demo

You'll install this to make sure your type of Wireless Card is
supported; if it works with Airopeek it will work with Airsnort. Go
through the installation process and continue on.

  2. Airsnort 0.2.7e

This is the most recent version of Airsnort in its binary format. It's
Tar Gzipped so you'll need a program to extract it, which is what the
    next program is for.

  3. WinRAR 3.42

WinRar will help you extract the Airsnort file to a directory on your
harddrive. Download this trial copy, install it, and then use it to
extract Airsnort to a directory on your harddrive. I put Airsnort in
    this directory (C:\Program Files\airsnort-0.2.7e\).

  4. GTK + 2.4.14

A supporting package needed by Airsnort. Download and unzip it to your harddrive. I put it here: (c:\Program Files\airsnort-0.2.7e\gtk+-2.4.14).

  5. Glib 2.4.7

A supporting package needed by Airsnort. Download and unzip it to your harddrive. I put it here: (c:\Program Files\airsnort-0.2.7e\glib-2.4.7).

  6. Pango 1.4.1

A supporting package needed by Airsnort. Download and unzip it to your harddrive. I put it here: (c:\Program Files\airsnort-0.2.7e\pango-1.4.1).

  7. ATK 1.8.0

A supporting package needed by Airsnort. Download and unzip it to your harddrive. I put it here: (c:\Program Files\airsnort-0.2.7e\atk-1.8.0).

  8. Realtek RTL8180 Driver

This link is for my driver (Belkin PCMCIA & D-Link PCI Cards), but
to install a different driver to work with Airopeek, download your
driver from Airopeek that is matched to your Wireless card manufacturer
and model. Here is their support section for other cards.

Now to get this driver from Airopeek to work, goto your windows driver system directory (c:\windows\system32\drivers) and create a copy of your current Ethernet card Driver for a backup.

Then rename the new driver you just downloaded from Airopeek as the
same name of your current Ethernet card driver. You can find this by
going to your hardware Device Manager and looking up the current driver
    name and location.

Then copy that new file into the driver directory replacing the current
driver. Since you've made a backup, if any goes wrong you can restore
the copy. Reboot your computer for the new driver to take effect. The
reason we have to 'trick' the computer in this way is because Windows
for some dumb reason doesn't want you to be able to change what driver
    your hardware uses at will.

Airopeek should now work if it's going to with your card. Otherwise consider buying a compatible wireless card.

  9. Add Airsnort's bin directory, along with the bin directories
of all its supporting packages to your windows path. You can do that by
typing "path" at the command prompt and paste in the path you would
like to add, or you can change this under My Computer in your Advanced
    Tab, Environmental Variables, Path.

Mine looks like this because I put Airsnort and it's associated files under the Program Files directory.

    %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program
    Files\airsnort-0.2.7e\bin;C:\Program
    Files\airsnort-0.2.7e\atk-1.8.0\bin;C:\Program
    Files\airsnort-0.2.7e\glib-2.4.7\bin;C:\Program
    Files\airsnort-0.2.7e\gtk+-2.4.14\bin;C:\Program
    Files\airsnort-0.2.7e\pango-1.4.1\bin

  10. Copy the Peek5.sys and peek.dll from the Airopeek directory (C:\Program Files\WildPackets\AiroPeek Demo) to the Airsnort /bin directory. (C:\Program Files\airsnort-0.2.7e\bin)

For some reason my copy of Airopeek would not work until I also
downloaded two more DLL's, which I easily found on the internet. So
we're going to just put the following in your Airsnort directory.

  11. Download iconv.dll to your Airsnort bin directory.

  12. Download intl.dll to your Airsnort bin directory.

  13. Now, if you've been able to get this far, just double click on the Airsnort icon and it should come up!

Project: Declutter your desk

Been a while since my last post.

Take a look at how we can tidy up our office with the wires around.
Something that my future techie can take on as a project.

I am thinking of putting a peg-board on the wall in front of the techie table.
put all our tools and cables there.

Norton Internet Security 2008

I think its time to drop Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 and 2008, go with Norton Internet Security 2008 for the time being until Trend decided to do something about their resource hungry application...

MSN Vundo Virus

My colleague notebook was infected with the latest MSN virus.
Vundo it is called. I tried Vundo Fix, none of antivirus can fix it.
None of the removal kits can remove it either.
I had to boot up using Windows PE or Hire 85 boot CD and removed the virus manually file by file.

If the file is killme.dll, then we have to remove emllik.dll, .BAK and so on.

After our removal of virus, we realized that Paste and network connections are disabled. Somehow the virus crippled the PC. We had to do a System Ghost imaging, and format the system to get it fixed...

MSN users, please beware..

Pretty Cool Magic Tricks in Windows XP

this is pretty cool... haha ! !! enjoy

MAGIC #1
An Indian discovered that nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the
computer which can be named as "CON". This is something pretty cool...and
unbelievable... At Microsoft the whole Team, couldn't answer why this
happened!
TRY IT NOW ,IT WILL NOT CREATE " CON " FOLDER

---- explanation -----
“CON” is a system name for Console in MS-DOS. It is just like you can’t create folders like LPT1, COM1, etc. Or Nul. During Windows 95 and 98, you can crash a system with these commands.
And it also shows that Windows XP is still based on MS-DOS codes. 
-----------------------

MAGIC #2
For those of you using Windows, do the following:

1.) Open an empty notepad file
2.) Type "Bush hid the facts" (without the quotes)
3.) Save it as whatever you want..
4.) Close it, and re-open it.

is it just a really weird bug? :-??

MAGIC #3
Microsoft¡¯s crazy facts

This is something pretty cool and neat...and unbelievable... At Microsoft
the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened!

It was discovered by a Brazilian.. Try it out yourself...

Open Microsoft Word and type

=rand (200, 99)

And then press ENTER
then see the magic................................

Partition Magic 8.0

Partition magic 8.0 needs to be patched to be used. The patch is for 8.01.

You use Partition magic 8.0 for Windows, resizing of harddrive partitions.
You use Partition magic DOS mode for resizing of harddrive partitions through boot disc.

The C Drive of normal systems is usually set at 60% or at least 100GB, and the D drive, the remaining 40% or whatever is of the remaining after the initial 100GB.

Unless of course, there are special app that requires that much space.

Checking Emails using Mail2Web

There is a free service to check emails, especially pop download mails from Singnet, Pacific internet or even any domain, using mail2web.

Go to http://www.mail2web.com to take a look.

If our clients have problem accessing their emails from their PC, for whatever reasons, a good work-around to 'de-panic' them is to provide this alternative web access until the real problem on the PC is resolved.

Used the advanced login, and key in the details of the account.

USB Driver for Win98

I just realized that Windows 98 SE has a generic driver for all the USB thumb drives / removable storage devices!

Its now in version 3.1, the link is below:
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

A little sad though, that this discovery is made right so late in the development of tech.

HijackThis

Hijack-This (Trend Micro Hijackthis) still stands out as one of the tool of the time.
Its ability to remove viruses and spyware as well as browser helper objects.

Techsupport Emails.. + knowledge sharing

I always have this negative thing going about repetitive information being read by multiple people. Its an utter waste of resource.

Was thinking through on how we can better manage email communications for the team.

I realized the main intern (super intern) will be given when the 'intern' is able to train other interns and their rank will be promoted to super intern, where they are empowered to go onsite visit on their own and handle mini projects. they can also receive techsupport emails and liaise with clients and suppliers.

Therefore, at this point, techsupport mailing address will always have one intern's address.

=====================================================================================

I have instituded Knowledge sharing and how our dept heads are to be involved in 3 knowledge repository and contribution...

1) we must constantly be looking at 1-blog.
2) we must be involved with one forum.
3) we must be signed up with a tech news letter.

All 3 of us must be looking from 3 different sources and we will meet once a week on friday morning to discuss what we have learnt the past week.

Will see how this goes. Soon, if this is successful, will institute this for the Interns as part of their training curriculum.

The case of the restarting Outlook 2003

Somehow, Outlook 2003 can cause blue-screen of death in XP Professional on Asus Notebook. Encountered that today.

Ran the repair tool in Office SBE 2003, and did mail archiving on the exchange mailbox.

Somehow the problem has disappeared right after that.

Oh yes, I also started Outlook 2003 in safe mode and that seems to be able to solve all Outlook-start-up problems...

Go to RUN >> type: Outlook /safe

The Back End IDEA...

The Idea of an overhaul... and solving problems...

Make the user feel that their PC has not changed after a re-format.
Yet, the problem that have caused them sleeplessness has disappeared.

That my friend.. is the challenge!

The way to send an email for status update... :)

Hi Everyone,

Boss gives full marks to this way of sending emails to everyone. Please use this standard ah...

comments in brackets..()

===============================
Hi all, (greetings)

Christina from YCCA (user and company details) has been unable to send a particular attachment to other people (short description of problem). Above I have attached a document file with screenshots inside showing the errors I received while trying to send the report document.(full details attached. description of error is not lengthy)

Methods that I have tried: (initiative taken to solve the problem, with resourcefulness)

1) Check for Office updates, it is on SP3 currently.
2) Tried enabling SSL-secured connection under email accounts -> more settings -> Advanced tab.
3) Send other documents to myself (worked).
4) Send test mails to myself and Timothy (the person she needs to send the report document to, worked).
5) Disable Symantec Internet Email Scanning.
6) Checked firewall settings
7) Checked email settings
8) Scan report document for virus

I have no idea how to proceed from here on, please advise on the next course of action. (willingness to learn and move forward. No sign of 'tai-chi' or pushing around..)

Thanks, (greetings)
Darrel

Using Norton Ghost 9.0

We realized that we cannot use SATA CD rom drives with DOS anymore.
Norton Ghost 2003, in our Techie toolkit, right now can no longer work new systems we setup.

Therefore, our workaround.. install Norton Ghost 9.0, dont activate, just install, do the ghost, label the FRESH with descriptions,( when this was done, with what version of Ghost, and who did it, who is this system for...)

After the ghost is installed and fresh is run, UNINSTALL THE GHOST 9.0.
